Canada plans to maintain 25% retaliatory tariffs on most US goods

Canada's finance minister said the government will maintain 25% retaliatory tariffs on tens of billions of dollars worth of U.S. goods, contradicting earlier reports that Ottawa had quietly paused tariffs on U.S. goods.

Minister François-Philippe Champagne said 70% of the retaliatory tariffs from March remain in effect , covering about $42 billion worth of US goods (excluding cars) , at a 25% tariff . Only some items have been temporarily exempted for public health and safety reasons .

Champagne's claim challenges an earlier research report
Champagne's statement disputed a report by Oxford Economics that said broad tariff exemptions leave Canada with virtually no tariffs on U.S. goods.

The report puts pressure on Prime Minister Mark Carney , who has been accused of a lack of transparency over his tariff strategy, despite his pledge to take a strong stance in trade disputes.

Carney's Liberal Party won the election on April 28.

Trade tensions escalated when President Trump imposed tariffs on a range of Canadian and Mexican products , including cars. Canada responded with a 25% tariff on American goods , which was later extended to cars made in the United States.

In April , Canada granted a six-month duty-free period for certain essential goods, food, health and public safety.

Automakers like GM and Honda are allowed to import vehicles duty-free under a program designed to keep production lines in Canada despite U.S. tariffs.
