Important Announcement from Ethereum Foundation

Ethereum is changing and there are big breakthroughs coming. zkEVM has been accelerating rapidly, allowing Ethereum to redesign L1 to support scale, verifiability, security, and censorship resistance at the same time. L2 is being strengthened to meet user needs. Here are the upcoming changes to Ethereum, announced by the Ethereum Foundation itself.

“We will have many important improvements that will both unlock huge benefits for our users and allow us to bring much, much more. This moment may be Ethereum’s best opportunity to deploy not only our technology but also our values at a global scale,” the Ethereum Foundation said.

The Ethereum team is rethinking its current approach to protocol design, development, and governance. This “protocol in transit” process is messy, requiring all team members to proactively respond to requests that are difficult to articulate and even harder to implement.

“We have a responsibility to use our skills to benefit the broader community. Delivering on this mission will require a new level of focus and collaboration for our team, the Protocol R&D teams within EF. This means doubling down on areas where EF has deep expertise and unique expertise that is unmatched in our ecosystem: from writing code, to publishing groundbreaking research, and coordinating major initiatives. To support this vision, we are making changes to the way we operate, reorienting ourselves around  three of our strategic goals : L1 scaling, blob scaling, and UX improvement.”

Going forward, the Ethereum Foundation will restructure its development team and create multiple smaller teams to coordinate around the above strategic goals.

“The changes we are announcing today are a departure from our previous way of working, but we feel they put us on a path to be more responsive and efficient. To mark the beginning of this new chapter and structure, we want to reintroduce “Protocol R&D” to the world under a new name:  Protocol .”

Goals and Team
The Ethereum Foundation said it has three important goals going forward, including:

Scaling for layer 1
Expand blob, increase data storage
Improve UX
“We ensure that these goals directly drive attention and resource allocation for each goal. We encourage every development team within Protocol to consider how their work supports Ethereum in delivering on these strategic initiatives.”

The Ethereum Foundation further revealed that it will put leaders that the Ethereum community trusts in charge of each area.

“Each leader will be responsible for the department they are in charge of. These are all people that the community trusts”

Specifically, the following people are responsible for ensuring the Ethereum Foundation delivers on each of its strategic goals:

Expanding Layer 1: Tim Beiko and Ansgar Dietrichs
Expanding Layer 2: Alex Stokes and Francesco D'Amato
Improving the User Experience: Barnabé Monnot and Josh Rudolf
They will be supported by Dankrad Feist, who will act as a strategic advisor, as well as lead on projects identified to advance these goals.

The Ethereum Foundation said it will streamline its staff and try to establish a unified organization, creating small groups for each goal while still ensuring coordination between groups.

“Being open to collaboration with everyone requires shared expectations and a high level of trust that everyone in the organization is performing at the highest level. Team leaders are responsible for ensuring that their team members meet the standards of technical excellence and enjoy continuous development, pushing themselves to go further. With a shared vision, we must ensure that the Ethereum house is a great place to work”
